Conspiracy Theory #2H2005 -- Katrina and Rita were BOTH sent by Arab occultists working for Al Qaida. Given the "coincidence" of these two storms, it's the only possible explanation. (If Katrina was a failed secret DARPA test of a hurricane control device, why would they make the same mistake TWICE???)
I thought it was the Japanes Yakuza, gaining revenge for our WWII victory. No, not really. :-)
In any event, since this country has not built a new refinery in about 30 years, and since the great majority are in the South, - we're screwed, at least in the short term. As for production in the Gulf, it will become much more expensive, due to the now obvious requirement for more robutst construction of platforms and rigs. Not to mention the fact that insurers will become more unwilling to cover these losses, which will surely become greater in the future.
But, there's lots of Tar Sands in Alberta, and Oil Shales in the Rockies. We won't run out of oil for quite a while, yet. It will get much more expensive, however. Still, it's a messy business, and I hope we can find reasonable alternates soon. Whatever these may be (I'm betting on Hydrogen), they must have energy densities equivalent or close to that of oil.
I paid $2.89/gal. when I filled up today. Down about $.50 from a few weeks ago, in the immediate aftermath of Katrina. Not sure what to make of this. The one thing Bush does well is phone up his oil buddies around the world and tell them to sit on it?
