Actually, it strikes me as one of his better efforts. But though he first goes out of his way to say we shouldn't expect intelligent aliens to be humanoid, he then concludes, based on "convergent evolution" that they may, after all, be "vaguely humanoid," that is -- with two (or multiple) eyes, hands with fingers, etc. (I wonder if tentacles could actually develop sufficient manipulative dexterity to produce an advanced technology -- maybe if the big tentacles had clusters of little tentacles at the ends to serve for "fingers"!)
Better yet, tentacles with "fingers" and smaller fingers coming out of each finger right on down to the molecular level.
